Devlin

  • Batkid Begins documentary
  • Continued Stardew Valley, Legends of Zelda Breath of the Wild, and Minecraft
  • Devlin is interested in exercising and is considering options including gymnastics and weight training.
  • Learned how to play Apples to Apples, Exploding Kittens and Battleship.
  • Devlin realized that matter can not be created or destroyed
  • We went to Duolingo (a language learning app) office’s for Lucien to participate in a user study for a new kid’s app. Lucien played with several apps while they watched how he uses technology and asked questions about tablet usage and then he used the app they are testing to learn a little Spanish. Devlin participated in all this and helped us answer questions. We also got to see what a tech company looks like from the inside, and learn about app development and jobs in the tech industry.
  • Devlin was very interested to discuss why we chose to grind our own peanut butter, whether it was less expensive for more expensive, so we discussed that and the ingredients of peanut butter and the process of grinding peanuts until the oil is extracted to become peanut butter.
  • Where do emotions come from?
  • Visited Phipps during the installation of the Holiday show and got to see how the people who work there create the show, as well as seeing large glass art pieces, playing a scavenger bingo game, playing in the food market and learned about the chocolate tree.
  • Devlin is thinking a lot about economics, running a business, managing money/ budgeting, and resource management while playing Stardew Valley.
  • Noted several things at the park today – tar, that had been used to patch the street – is it a natural material? A leaf cyclone, got to stand inside of it and run to stay with it, and swinging – angles created and and how to measure angles of swinging.
  • Researching the history of ninjas and now real life ninjas have been represented or used as character influence in video games.
  • Continued discussion of fire safety and conducted experiments with fire safely.
  • Used math in every day life to figure out things like – if seasons were years, how old would each of us be?
  • Dev is very interested in the 4th wall…”The fourth wall is a performance convention in which an invisible, imagined wall separates actors from the audience. While the audience can see through this “wall”, the convention assumes, the actors act as if they cannot.”
  • Learned rules for boogle and played. Jigsaw puzzles.

Lucien

  • Started playing Stardew Valley. In Stardew Valley, the player takes the role of a character that, to get away from the hustle of an office job, takes over their grandfather’s dilapidated farm in a place known as Stardew Valley. The player manages their character’s time and energy levels as they clear land, plant and tend crops, raise livestock, craft goods, mine for ores, and engage in social activities, including romances leading towards marriage, with the various residents of the small town, all while earning in-game money to expand their farm https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stardew_Valley
  • In both Stardew Valley and Minecraft Lucien is beginning to recognize words and read them himself.
  • Listened to Percy Jackson and Pippi Longstocking audiobooks
  • Interested in making a video game so we downloaded Stencyl and used the quick start guide to learn about how to make games.
  • Battleship, Uno, matching game, Guess Who

  • Women in Nasa legos – constructed and learned about women in astronautics.

  • Used pie fraction pieces to learn about quarters as they relate to ancestry (Balto was 1/2 wolf, Balto’s children with a dog were 1/4 wolf.)

  • Turtles hatching, how they know to go to sea, mammals vs reptiles, egg teeth, weight/friction of giant turtle moving across sand
  • Trip to Pittsburgh Zoo. Interesting questions about plurals around the Lynx. What is a plural Lynx?
  • Thrift store trip. Lucien bought a disco ball lamp that did not work. We took it apart and learned about the wiring, gears
  • Trip to Beechwood Farms
  • Lucien is playing Stardew Valley. He is using a calendar to count dates til different events, adding and subtracting to find the out how long until character’s birthdays.
  • Lucien decided to buy a skateboard with his money. He discovered he could use it as a catapult and experimented with different techniques to see how far he could launch rocks.
